According to many Travel industry whitepapers, discussion groups, and the most recent Air Transport News (ATN) airline survey on Airport Customer experience, there is more pressure on airlines to differentiate themselves in order to capture increased market share. Some are finding clever ways to accomplish this by marketing themselves as an experience instead of a product, based largely on the rising demand from consumers for a more authentic and engaging travel experience.

According to many airline surveys, the top 2 reasons customers access an airline Lounge is to escape the Terminal chaos, and relax over a bite to eat and a drink.

It is difficult to implement an improved Food & Beverage offering without incurring significant expense increases. One option is to implement unique marketing initiatives that generate revenue in order to help offset the Lounge operating costs.

How to deliver revenues optimally then? Many Lounge operators do not embrace a philosophy of charging customers for products and services which have typically always been complimentary in their Lounge. Many other carriers are contractually prohibited from selling Products and services in their Lounges due to existing exclusivity agreements between Airport Authorities and Terminal Concessionaires.
